How To Make Money

So you want to make money blogging? I’ll admit, the very idea of generating wealth by publishing content is an intriguing concept indeed. But if you’ve never made money online before, it might sound too good to be true.

Right now, my girlfriend’s sister is starting a blog of her own with the intent to make money blogging. And while she is writing about a profitable topic (fashion) which is good, I see her making a lot of newbie mistakes when attempting to monetize.

Below are what I believe to be the biggest factors that dictate whether or not a blog will be able to make money. If you’re just starting out (or have yet to make money with your own blog), I encourage you to evaluate each topic on this list to see if there’s anything being overlooked with your own website.

Wrong Topic Of Blog

Making money is tough when you choose the wrong topic. For example, writing about current events, celebrity gossip, or world news will be difficult to monetize since people are used to getting that information for free online.

A 6-figure blogger by the name of Yaro Starak, recommends writing blogs that solve problems when making money is the goal. I agree with this advice. Some big issues that need help solving include, weight loss, personal development, or how to start an online business.

Consistency With blogging

While building your blog into a business it’s important to remember that your not going to blow up overnight, next week, or even a few months. Blogging is a marathon and it’s important to establish that mindset early on.

My recommendation is to develop a regular schedule at which you’ll publish content to your blog. This helps you establish a routine and sets expectations for the reader. My regular posting schedule is just one time a week, usually on Mondays.

If you’re able to combine the right topic along with consistency, you’re already halfway to your goal of making money.

E-mail Optin Form

Combining an email optin form with a free offer is what’s going to make the real money for your blog. This might not seem apparent at first, but believe me it’s true.

When someone provides you with their email address it gives you a means of reaching out to them in the future. Not only will you be able to notify your email list subscribers about the cool new blog posts you’ve written, but you’ll also be able to recommend your own products and affiliate products in some of the messages.

Take time educate yourself about email optin forms and how to set up an auto responder sequence. It’s required reading if you want to make money blogging.

Multiple Income Streams From Blogs

One of the mistakes I made early on was not selling anything on my blog. I don’t recommend waiting around 8 months to actually pitch something to your readers. If you want to make money, you need to sell stuff to your email list.

Now, not everyone is going to be interested in every offer you make so make sure you offer a diverse line of products that cater to your audiences needs. I diversify my product offering by integrating affiliate offers for SEO tools, logo designs, and business books. I sell my own product too. That’s a lot of opportunities to make money.

If you are serious about affiliate marketing here is a tutorial that explains how to seamlessly incorporate affiliate marketing programs in your blog monetization strategy

Another step to take toward more effective monetization is to create a services page. This gives you the option to advertise personal consulting or contract work that doesn’t require you to actually make anything. I use my services page to capture leads for my SEO reseller services.

Making money via a blog isn’t rocket science, but there are a lot of moving parts that can get confusing if you’re just getting started. Just remember that as long as you pick the right topic, are consistent, and continue to improve your blog’s income will grow with you.

Nice tips Brett, many new bloggers make first mistake that they try to cover more than one niche at a time in one blog, which reduce the SEO power of the blog.
I never tried email list building yet, but as I heard it’s a best way to earn, I will definitely try it in future on my blog. Thanks! :)

Ironically they won’t…… here is why ,

Ads revenue and even whether an ad partner accepts a newbie depends on traffic which is not very huge since the blog is new …. The only ones who boast of big success in generating revenue from ads are the ones with established blogs with lots of pageviews .

So its better to establish yourself as a brand and start by earning from your own products and services then pick up affiliates and by the time your blog gets established you can start expecting a bigger chunk of revenue from direct ad sales .

One more tip for bloggers trying to monetize their blogs is not never choose a niche that does not interest them: it may start well, but it will eventually fade, or continue with low quality content. Sticking to one own’s interests is the key to keep blogs alive and creative. :) Advertisers who work with bloggers like that vitality to blogs.

I agree with that ….

Some people just start with a niche with a higher CPC worth and later find themselves stuck with content ideas and end up hiring a freelancer to keep the site alive in the worst case. The income would still fade away , so it is very important to see if the niche interests you before taking the plunge !

Indeed. And that’s very sad… The genuineness of a blog gets completely lost.

Another thing I noticed across blogs is the tendency to keep posts vague and not very exhaustive. A good post should come after at least a few hours of research, and from the ideas the research itself made us come up with. In fact, the most successful blogs are those that convey new ideas, or at least revisited ideas, and some background research.

As a blogger, I honestly find the whole researching part the most exciting and interesting. ;) It pushes me to brainstorm and note down the flow of thought, which is a blessed moment for people who love writing.

Building the email list is so true – I’m only just starting to benefit from mine. The problem is a lot of people want to make money fast (that’s why I wrote this: [Link Removed]).

But you’re right I suppose, it takes time to build up an email list, but that’s where the money is – the money is in the list as the saying goes!
